I have just joined the world of FOSS and Linux community recently. In fact, I have all the while been using open source software. Just that I have recently switched from a typical Windows OS user to Linux user by adopting Ubuntu as my Linux version and so far I’ve been quite happy with it. Never ever switched back to Windows XP ever since I installed Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn on my Toshiba Satellite Notebook. But there are some exceptions, programs that run on XP and windows programming that requires me to boot up my XP.
The reason for dual-boot is not to run the WINE or any other Windows simulator on top of my Ubuntu and waste up too much resources on running Windows XP and I simply feel that it’s an insult to Ubuntu (lol…sorry that it sounds a bit extreme as I find myself overly excited on Ubuntu). I have been expriencing a lot of stuff on Ubuntu platform. In fact, I never regretted to dual-boot it with my windows XP.
I know there are a lot of things to learn and pick up, but doing so is so much of fun and never tired of trying out new stuff. Maybe it’s due to the fact that I like to learn? But I think sometime and somehow, I want to learn too much at the same time and end up learning nothing at all. Maybe can say that I’m Jack of all trade, master of none! LOL… I think I have to review my plans and start to pay attention on those I should learn first and put more efforts in. I wish to master at least one “skill set” first before I move on to another one on my plate =)
Now I think I am really trying to put myself into deep troubles by learning too much things at the same time. I have been trying to look for all sort of alternatives for the programs I used to run in Windows XP. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find much of it though there are equally good free open source software available, but not all can be replaced. For example, the pen tablet use for digital drawing, and the Go Editor and Storm Codec I installed on Windows XP, as well as Maya and my favourite Dreamweaver. In fact, there are a lot more. But it’s ok, as long as I need to run those proprietary software that does not run on Linux or WINE well, I will boot my Windows XP.
Right now, I’m 100% comfortable with Ubuntu and am always looking for ways to tweak it and to make it into the way I want it to be, in other words, my own Ubuntu =) Ubuntu is really highly customizable and you can really do what ever you want with it without running the risk to break your OS apart and have to reinstall your OS.
I’m having easy time playing around with Ubuntu compare to Windows, though most of the sophisticated software out there supports Windows and MacOS, but then I do wish to see a day when Linux become one of the major OS supported by them. Thus, next time we will see everything list Linux (whichever built or version) as one of the supported OS. Right now, I’m trying to squeeze everything I can from Ubuntu and I want to make it into a powerful and nice looking workstation =)
